You are on an expedition with your team of archaeologists to go find the Sun God Mapuche statue before those bandits do! Will you be able to get what you came for or will the Curse of Mapuche get you first…

I usually do not have good experiences with Indiana Jones-esque themed escape rooms, but man was this one the worst. The rooms were decorated okay… but my biggest gripe was that nothing was working when we attempted this escape room. Some of the puzzles even had previous markings from past groups, so we could tell exactly what the answers were without even attempting the puzzles. Many of the puzzles were finnicky and did not work at all. We had to alert the game masters several times to get clarification or things fixed. Then the final straw was that the final puzzle did not even register properly, so no one knew we “completed” the room. Not even the game masters. Very unfortunate.

I cannot stress enough how I would never recommend this experience to anyone. The rooms were obviously not well-maintained and the game masters were indifferent to it. This is one of the worst escape rooms I have ever done.

This is the first installment of The Basement series based in Las Vegas. I did this escape room after The Study which was in Los Angeles, but would highly recommend to do The Basement series in story-order like intended. I am a huge scaredy-cat when it comes to horror themed escape room games, but I was convinced to do this one since I had already done The Study. You have been captured by serial killer Edward Tandy and if you do not do something soon to escape, you will really end up as a goner!!!

Even though nowadays you can easily say an escape room like this could be outclassed by more technology heavy rooms, The Basement really brings an experience unique to itself. After all of the escape rooms I have done, this series is still one of the most unique and no other has been able to compare. The story telling and experience really immerses you into this setting. The puzzles are fairly simple and not difficult at all, but they are very fitting to this theme.

The Las Vegas location did a really good job and was comparable to the Los Angeles branch. Would highly recommend this room to any horror-themed lovers.

The Peking Dragon escape room is part of The Sparrow Files series at Epic Team Adventures. My significant other and I were looking for an escape room to do with just two people and this one looked doable after some research online. Little did we know that we would totally be blown away by the story-telling experience. If you have read my other posts, you know that I put a lot of value in the experience itself versus having a bunch of puzzles just randomly sitting around in a room. For The Peking Dragon, you will be thrown into one of P.I. Carmen Sparrow’s famous cases and it is up to you to discover the truths!

I just wanted to preface this by saying… we failed. We did not beat this escape room, in fact I believe you need at least three people not two for this room due to one particular puzzle I will not specify. That being said, why do I still rate this room so highly? The story-telling experience is phenomenal. They say the theme of this escape room is noir and at first I did not really completely understand what that meant in an escape room setting, but man was it cool. It is unique in the way the story is told as well as the theme. If you value those points in an escape room, I highly recommend giving this room a try! If Epic Team Adventures release more escape rooms in this series, I will definitely be back!

SPECIAL OPS: MYSTERIOUS MARKET

This escape room is Special Ops: Mysterious Market at The Escape Game based in New York specifically. This company has this same room in many other locations as well, so experiences may vary. You are a field agent and it is up to you to investigate to see what is going on in this mysterious market. Little do you know that one thing will lead to another…

The theme of this escape room is cute and the puzzles all added to the ambiance and vibe. Unfortunately, during this experience some of the puzzles did not work as intended and it ended up being a lot more janky than we’d like. There were some instances where the game master had to interject to let us know something was supposed to happen when it did not. My thoughts are that due to the high usage of this room, many parts of it probably do not work as intended anymore. I really hope in the future they do their best to mitigate these scenarios since it really destroys the immersiveness that escape rooms strive to obtain.

Conundrum Museum at Boxaroo from a distance might look like a very simple theme, but you will more than likely find excitement in the most unexpected places. You are visiting the museum with your friends then out of no where… something happens and you are being framed! You must investigate in order to prove your innocence before the cops come!

What stands out most for this escape room are the puzzles. With the majority being logic-based puzzles, they all add a little bit to the theme to create this “museum”. I had a lot of fun working through the puzzles and they felt really rewarding when it was solved. The story-telling was cute and was overall a really solid escape room.

I would recommend this escape room to anyone staying a couple days in Boston!

My friends and I were in L.A. for the weekend and we were looking for escape rooms to try out. In the end we settled for Da Vinci’s Challenge at Quest Room because some of us had done other escape rooms by the Quest Room company. We had a really large group so we opted to book two time slots, one after another and try to “race” to see who could have the better clear time. The premise was that we are in Florence studying under Leonardo Da Vinci and he has given you and your team a test to clear!

Da Vinci’s Challenge is an older generation escape room where there is less of an experience and more of a puzzle heavy themed room. If this is something that you are looking for then this room is for you! For me, I would have preferred if there was something more to the experience. The puzzles were not difficult and in fact my group ended up being the group that solved some of the puzzles not the way it was intended, so it probably lessened the experience.

Quest Room has some really cool rooms, but this one could probably be skipped if you are looking for more of a story-based experience!

Your uncle is missing and was last seen in the Andes Mountains on a mining expedition. You and your team find yourself in the Dragon’s Lair at Maze Rooms Los Angeles in search of the missing uncle.

I am a sucker for fantasy themed escape rooms and this one was a huge disappointment for me. Overall Maze Rooms Los Angeles dishes out average to above average escape rooms, however the Dragon’s Lair was a miss for me. It may be because this room is an older generation escape room, but even for it’s time there was not much to the experience. The rooms were decorated, but it was not done in a way that felt immersive. It literally felt like we were moving from one room in a warehouse building to another room versus what other escape rooms are like. The puzzles fit the theme and they tried to add little Easter eggs to appeal to nerd/gaming culture. Finally when you reach the end, the storyline never really takes off and leads to a flat finish.

The Dragon’s Lair tried really hard to provide a fantastical experience, but it just did not reach it for me personally.

Sky Odyssey at Maze Rooms Los Angeles brings you and your friends on an adventure to the famous Mount Olympus. There you will interact with the gods and be sent on quests to assist them with whatever it is that they might need!

I had very high expectations for Sky Odyssey, purely due to the theme itself. The Greek mythology world was always a place that I have been drawn to and of course I was very excited to partake! The decorations and ambiance did not disappoint. The room was well decorated and very calculative on where things were placed. The puzzles were themed appropriately to their Greek Gods which made it exciting! The reason why I would put this room so much lower than what I wanted it to be is due to the fact that a couple puzzles just were not working properly when we did this escape room. Not to mention one of the clues was left out of the room so we were not able to have a proper attempt of one of the puzzles since it was not set properly.

Unfortunately, since I put experience as a huge factor on whether or not I enjoyed an escape room – I would not be able to recommend this one. The immersion was broken and pieces were missing from puzzles when they should not have been. It could have potentially been a great escape room if it was played out the way it was intended.

Are you a fan of Harry Potter?? If you are Hidden Donkey has an escape room for you! Irvine School of Wizardry and the Dragon Wand pays homage to the beloved fantasy world theme, located in the city of Irvine, CA. Do you have what it takes to take on the magic and puzzles in order to defeat the Dark Lord???

This escape room is well known for it’s theme and decor, and man did it not let down. If you are really into the Harry Potter franchise, you are in for a real treat. With little easter eggs and whimsical designs I found delight in the experience. The puzzles were adorable and stay true to the theme. All the props added to the ambiance and I would not have it any other way!

Highly recommend for just the presentation and theme itself. The puzzles were not difficult, but overall I had fun! The only downside was that we probably had too many people in our group so there was not as much to go around. Would recommend with a smaller group size if possible… like 4.

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action (Steam)

Image from https://store.steampowered.com/app/447530/VA11_HallA_Cyberpunk_Bartender_Action/

Overall Rating: 8.5/10
Difficulty – Easy
Theme – 9/10
Fun/Enjoyment – 8/10

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action by Sukeban Games is very unique visual novel game set in a futuristic cyberpunk world. However, even with technology as advanced as it is in the future – the people still have their problems. You follow Jill, a bartender at the bar VA-11 Hall-A in Glitch City – one of the most innovative cities in the world.

I am no stranger to visual novel games, so what really grabbed me for VA-11 Hall-A was the cyberpunk theme. There are not many games out there that embrace this genre well, let alone a visual novel. The vibe was 100% there with the theme and with it the type of feelings you would feel sitting at a bar. I found myself either sipping a cup of tea or cracking open a can of beer to enjoy and complement the experience. There is a large library of music that you can change per day to alter the ambiance that the bar would provide for it’s customers. There are a lot of bangers in this one guys, especially if you are a fan of video game music like myself.

The biggest impact from this game is that I found myself invested in all of the characters that came to drink at the bar. You learn bit by bit about them everyday to paint a picture of who they are and how they will grow as a person as time passes. This game is not at all shy with the dark themes, which I love. Not to mention! Of course since you are a bartender, you get to learn about what type of drinks they prefer as you try and maneuver the encounters by mixing up and serving exactly what they need. This made the interactions really adorable, fun and unique.

If you are looking for an experience, I can definitely say I enjoyed this game to the point where I would recommend it to others. That being said, I do not think it is for everyone. You first need be into visual novels and second into a futuristic-fantasy theme such as this. Worth a try if you think it’s your genre!
